this week’s instagram worthy feed is for all you foodies out there. i recently fell happily down a bit of a julia child rabbit hole. i read a sweet little book with a long name entitled Provence, 1970: M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, James Beard, and the Reinvention of American Taste by luke barr, the great-nephew of food writer M.F.K. Fisher. it’s a fun read about these major food influencers and their time together in provence, france. i got curious about julia and paul child’s summer home where the group often gathered for gastronomical evenings and ended up discovering that their rustic holiday home (complete with julia’s famous kitchen pegboard), La Pitchoune, was built on the homestead of Simone Beck, known as Bramafam, and La Pitchoune (or ‘La Peetch’) and after the death of her beloved husband julia left La Pitchoune back with the Beck family, and soon after in the 1990s, a woman named Kathie Alex purchased La Pitchoune and turned it into a beloved cooking school, Cooking With Friends.

in 2016 after a near-decade hiatus, La Peetch has returned to its roots as a center for culture, food, and community after Makenna, a bright-eyed young Smith graduate (just like Julia) bought La Pitchoune from Kathie Alex and reopened this incredible cooking school retreat, event location and vacation rental, @lapeetchfr. Pitchounians, as they have been called for decades return year after year, drawn by the magic of the french countryside, the good company, the fabulous food, wine, and of course the @lapeetchfr cooking classes! here’s a look at what you might have to look forward to should you, too decide to visit @lapeetchfr. i’m definitely adding it to my must-do list!

  1. What a cool story and beautiful place to visit.
I worked in the food section at the Seattle Times for many years and had the honor of meeting Julia once. She was exactly who you would expect her to be…warm and down to earth. One of my heroes. Very exciting.

  2. Wow what a cool kitchen. I love hanging everything on the walls on a pegboard. I have a rod hanging on one wall where a lot of smaller stuff hangs (a DIY job I’m very pleased with).
My mother in law said, when she saw it: “This isn’t a kitchen, it’s a studio for cooking.” (We are renting a house at the moment). This is a bit similar.

  3. Oh great. Now I need green tile in my life. This is all so beautiful! I’m going to need a job so I can go stay there!

  4. Oh wow! My mean little sister attended the cooking school in the 90’s when Kathy was running it (she was a chef at the time and her boss picked up the tab ) and the resident cat slept on her bed every night . It was a wonderful experience for her that she cherishes

  5. Ahhhh, before I even read anything and saw the peg-board and ALL the utensils, I thought Julia Child!!!
Wow, what a treat it must be to visit, eat, cook, stay there! I remember how lovely that little holiday house of theirs sounded after reading a book about her life!!
I will just sit back and wait to see and read about it when you go Victoria!
