trick or treat?! it’s halloween weekend and it’s always been one of my very favorite holidays. i used to make my own crazy costumes and got very into it (mermaid, anyone?), but these days i mostly just enjoy the imaginative creativity of the kiddos out there. i am invited to a neighborhood halloween pancake breakfast though and i just might wear something spooky for the hell of it. here’s a bit of darkness to put you in the holiday mood. happy halloween one and all!

xo, victoria

  1. i first saw artist carlos amorales’ swarm of black butterflies via domino and like them, i thought what a cool halloween display! bats would probably make it creepier, but the butterflies are beautiful and very unexpected. in a pinch for halloween decor this year? you can order these Butterfly Wall Decal Removable Stickers and get them tomorrow!
  2. if you filled a darkened entry hall with a bunch of these Roman Bust Candles i’ll bet it might look a lot like floating ghost heads! boo! i’m quite late for the halloween decorating ideas, i know – apologies! but maybe stock up now and save them for next year?
  3. The main room of this converted church in Rockland Maine by art gallery director Donna McNeil is painted entirely white and appointed sparsely to amplify the expansiveness of the 21 feet high ceilings! but it’s these rather gothic-looking black church pews have me swooning. minimal perfection!
  4. if you’ve been paying attention you know i love a good paper globe lantern. and this charming bookshop in quebec has used them to create what was once an old barn with some really lovely ambiance. what a cozy spot to shop and read — and drink wine, as it’s a winery, too. if you’re ever in the province of quebec, do give Clos de l’orme blanc a visit.
  5. erin heimstra of @apartment_34 has the ideal house for celebrating halloween, but it’s gorgeous every day. an old victorian in san francisco, her black trimmed window moldings get me every time. so dramatic and eye-catching, i wonder if she’s added some spider webbing this year?
  6. Is anyone in need of a great big hand? i love this beautiful black hand chair photographed by the uber-talented @piariverola. if it were mine i’d put a scary big jack-o-lantern on it.
  7. isn’t this a very cozy vestibule to sit and give out halloween treats to the kiddos? it’s so warm and inviting with the layered sheepskin throws and pillows. even on the chilliest nights, it looks like a grand spot to cuddle up with a hot toddy.
  8. i love glass cloches (sometimes called bell jars) like these and they’re kind of perfect to have on hand for all kinds of holiday decorating. for Halloween, i envision skulls, spiders, or miniature pumpkins on display beneath them. for christmas one year i filled mine with vintage ornaments and it looked super pretty.
