if you’ve followed along with me for a while, you’ll know i love to read. i can’t go anywhere without a book in my bag, and a real book — not my ipad, which honestly i gave a good shot, but i just love the feel of the binding and paper pages of a good book. anyway, i digress. i’m taking a brief break this week to honor the veteran’s day holiday here tomorrow and also because of a whole bunch of personal things i need to attend to. i’d like to say i’m actually taking a book break, but alas, i am not. but!! i will be reading at some point in the week’s evenings and i’m currently working on jonathan franzen’s new novel, crossroads which i’m really getting into. good characters, good storyline — i like it all quite a lot. i also struggled a bit with sally rooney’s new book, beautiful world, where are you? but in the end i really felt a strong message about life these days (including blergh, social media) and was really happy i kept with it. as i’ve mentioned before, i track all my reading on goodreads and i like seeing what friends are reading, too. i find it helpful when you discover whose taste jives with your own and then check for their recommendations when in need of a new book to read. i’ve got a few good books on my to-read list right now, including The Lost Daughter by elena ferrante, The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles (who wrote a fav of mine a gentleman in moscow), and ruth ozeki’s latest The Book of Form and Emptiness (i’ve loved all her books, especially my year of meats). i’m always curious to hear about your favorite books and what you’re reading right now, so do spill the tea. i’ll see you back here on monday!

  1. Victoria, if you haven’t yet read The Mysterious Life of Addy LaRue add it to your list! It was my favorite book this year!

  2. I’ve had a ‘lucky’ reading year. You know when it’s just a string of great books, one after another? It’s been that. :) My three favorite reads this year so far have been “Hamnet” by Maggie O’Farrell, “Her Body and Other Parties” by Carmen Maria Machado, and “Matrix” by Lauren Groff. I might even go so far as to suggest these books all have a theme connecting them; women are the universe’s most magical creatures. Hope to pick up Ozeki and Franzen’s newest offerings soon- thanks for the recs. Happy reading!

  3. I recently finished The Bear by Andrew Krivak – I’m still thinking about it……… it was sad & peaceful at the same time.

  4. Hi Victoria. I’ve been following your blog for some years now and this is my first comment. Glad to know I’m not the only one struggling with Rooney’s latest. Thanks for all the book recommendations you posted. I hope you’ll have some time to breathe during your break!

    • I think it’s the unusual writing style at first that threw me a bit, and some very deep conversations, but I thought it really came together and I ended up loving it.

  5. I just finished She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. I always have international Chinese students so the historical context and map was really fascinating.
