as i mentioned last week, i’ve been really missing having a dining room. i have a kind of makeshift one in the living area, and i have an outdoor dining area which is used a lot living at the beach, but i’ve been toying with the idea of turning the office/guest room into a real live usable dining room. i was deep into it this weekend, searching the internet for looks i love and furniture pieces that might work. i think a round table would work best in the very square room so i was on the hunt for the perfect table and plan on using a mix of my vintage dining chairs around it. i think i’ll need a round woven jute rug of some kind, too and then a very large paper pendant for over the middle of the table. it’s such a pretty little room with lots of windows and french doors to the patio and i really just don’t use it enough as a guest room, and who am i kidding with a desk? i’m a laptop on the sofa girl the majority of the time. the ‘desk’ just ends up a catch-all for paperwork and books. so i think a credenza or a rustic bench of some type would be nice under the large window — to display my vintage serving ware, a few collectibles, some plants or foraged branches — and maybe a mirror with a wee bar tray. anyway, here are some of the methods to my madness. i’m looking to create an eclectic vintage-modern mix, pretty minimal and very monochromatic with lots of white and wood. so as always, i’m inspired by some of leanne ford’s projects (we share a love of white and the quirky aesthetic!). i’ll keep you posted as to what i end up doing, but in the meantime, consider this a kind of mood board for inspiring looks i like but don’t take it all too literally — there are always tweaks. that’s the fun part — making it your own.

  1. such inspiring images. can’t wait to see what you do with the room. who can’t love a good dining room!? i love the idea of cozying up in a tiny, well-appointed room with friends and great lighting.

  2. Beautiful! Can’t wait to see what you come up with. And you know, it’s very European (I’m Dutch, living in Southern California) to have a big table in the room, to eat at and to work on. No need for an extra desk/office space. Just use your table!

  3. Growing up, our dining room was heavily used. We ate meals there, watched TV, did homework, mended clothes, paid bills, etc. It was great to have a big surface to spread your stuff out on. My brother and I still use the dining room much more than the living room. :-) I’m really interested to see how your space shapes up. I got gifted a bunch of tulip chairs when my friend’s office was getting rid of them(!) but all the tables I have are too tall (I’m short) so I’m still looking for something that will work. We have no IKEA here and vintage sources are very limited.

  4. You SF dining room from when you lived in Herb Caen’s old apartment is still my favorite dining room inspriration–the wood table with the tulip chairs!

  5. Desks! LOL! What are we thinking?! This sounds like a fabulous plan and I can’t wait to see how you activate the beautiful ideas in this mood board. Good luck!
