red leather padded chaise lounge. / sfgirlbybay

some days, you just wanna lay down. not necessarily go back to bed, per se, but just lounge a bit. on those lazy days a chair just doesn’t cut it — one needs a proper chaise or daybed. the danish seem to have this design concept down pat, with their beautiful scandinavian daybeds and i for one am following suit. i work from my daybed on a daily basis and while it’s probably not ideal for my posture, it sure is cozy and relaxing. daybeds come in all styles and shapes — from modern classics like the eames, to vintage barcelona beauties, to cots and cozy cushioned diy built-ins. take your pick, and then take a nice long nap.

seashell with florals on pink back drop. / sfgirlbybay

how’s that for a tongue-twister? it’s definitely hard to say three times fast. but seashells, all on their own are really quite lovely. i found a delicate vintage pink sea fan in the french countryside (how did it get there, i wonder?) and it got me thinking about decorating around the seashell motif. in small doses, i think they’re a unique addition to any decor — almost like a small sculpture. and seashell or sea fan art prints are quite nice as well. kara rosenlund is someone whose taste i quite admire and she utilizes a lot of found shells in her decor (and she has a new line of beautiful oceanic inspired photographic prints out as well). have a look at your local flea market or etsy and find your own sculpture from the sea, but remember to be mindful of mother nature and respectful of our oceans, only collecting shells long past their lives.

large palm frond. / sfgirlbybay

hurrah, another weekend has finally arrived. it’s starting to get very warm and sunny here in southern california, just in time for the fourth of july weekend. i hope you all have some safely distanced but fun plans for the weekend but before we take off for independence day, here’s some weekend inspiration for you.

xo, victoria

  1. y’all seemed very interested in my found palm frond, and i see i’m not the only one in love with the way nature can brighten up your space (for free — just wait for wind!). i love @jacqui_turk’s photograph, styled by @mrjasongrant — just lovely!
  2. @kawa_heart_studio has the most incredible cottage, and in it are so many charming nooks and niches. this circular arch and those built-in cubbies is just one of them and it’s perfect.
  3. i love seeing this remodel take shape and @houseinhabit’s newly remodeled bathroom is so enviable. they did this all themselves and i am awe-inspired. that ceiling looks like such a dreamy thing to stare up at from that lovely vintage clawfoot tub.
  4. littlegreenshed’s capture of this pretty little corner at Elmley Nature Reserve is so pretty. it makes me want to hunt down some of these oversized white clay jugs next time we’re searching for super marché in france.
  5. this outdoor coffee table on wheels looks just dreamy. i’ve seen these DIY pallet tables made before, but i’ve never seen them painted whitewashed and i love it.
  6. this pretty desk setup makes me swoon. the curved legs of the table are gorgeous, and the sculpture is stunning. not to mention those beautiful ornate moldings on the ceilings.
  7. i love built-in shelving but it’s recessed built-in shelves that really get me inspired. these ones are so pretty, and styled quite minimally but really beautifully. less can always be more.
  8. this outdoor patio is so inviting — i love the low, comfy looking outdoor sofas, area rug and especially admire that keep-you-warm-and-cozy outdoor fireplace for chilly nights. bravo on a design well done!

diy wood storage rack. / sfgirlbybay

there’s no need to get all hung up about your storage dilemmas when the answer is quite literally, right in front of you. i am all about storing some of my signature wares in plain sight, and i even like the look – a lot! what others might consider eyesores, i consider putting just a bit of your personality and personal style on display. i hang all my favorite mesh and rattan shopping totes, for instance, and not only are they at the ready, i think they look rather swell. so if you’re short on storage space, you might consider going vertical, and hanging your favorite bits and bobs right out in front of everyone! there are so many creative looking hooks, pegs and racks of all kinds nowadays, the possibilities are endless — from vintage finds to DIY tree branches, the idea is to keep your options open. here are a few ideas to get you started, and out of the closet!
