wear this there: hôtel le sud Juan Les Pins, french riviera / sfgirlbybay

i must truly be in holiday fantasy mode because we’re off to the south of france once again for this week’s wear this there. i keep seeing this pretty spot popping up in my feeds of late, so let’s go! we’re headed to the very charming Hôtel Le Sud in Juan Les Pins, located on the French Riviera situated between Nice and Cannes in Southeastern France. fancy! but not too — the chic resort town of Juan-les-Pins is known for its long, sandy beaches and seafront promenade, and this hotel fits right in. whitewashed with colorful graphic details and actually quite casual — they even serve meals from their very own La Cambrousse food truck. i love vacations where i don’t really need to dress up after a long day at the beach, pool or exploring the local surroundings. so we’re going super beachy with some white denim jeans worn with a navy tank top and denim jean jacket. we’ll add some oomph with a cute sunhat, some sassy french sneakers, and oversized sunnies. i’ve added a neck scarf, too, because duh, it’s france. i’ve thrown in a swimsuit, of course, a cute cover-up that doubles as an evening dress (look at that back detail!) and i know they’re extravagant, but we’re fantasizing so let’s pack these prada slides. we’ve packed you some cute gingham pj’s and a good book, too — The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe, there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. Would you have done anything differently, if you had the chance to undo your regrets? this book gives you some insight into what that might look like. bon voyage!

fruit for thought. displaying fresh fruit in your kitchen / sfgirlbybay

i don’t know about you, but when i come home from the farmer’s market, or my favorite local provisions shop, i tend to want to keep it all out on display. it’s just food, i know, but there’s something so pretty about fresh seasonal summer fruits and i might even feel something close to pride, or gratifying about having just shopped for healthy food. dumb, or self-congratulatory perhaps, but i think it also helps me eat better and reminds me about what i’ve got in stock, rather than have it tucked away in the produce drawer in the fridge and forgotten. something that might be often overlooked is how just a simple bowl of summer fresh fruit, peaches or apricots, for instance, look so pretty out on display in your kitchen or dining table. it’s something i always see in European homes but not quite as often here in the states and it’s really just so appealing to me, and clearly so easy to do. so, i’ve been keeping a lot of fresh fruits on a ceramic platter and a lovely black marble bowl full of lemons (they smell so good) out on my countertop after my trip to the weekly farmers market — and it makes me feel a little bit like i’m living on the amalfi coast, or perhaps Provence — it’s a lovely illusion, anyway, and a practice i’ve really begun to embrace. they always add them in photoshoots, so why not save a little on fresh flowers and instead display colorful produce that you can actually eat instead? not to mention, the vessels and hanging baskets themselves can be so gorgeous and they can make for incredible tablescapes for entertaining, too!

color story: shine on decorating with shiny objects / sfgirlbybay

this week’s color story is all about shiny pretty objects d’ art — brass, mirror, glass, and chrome specifically, but maybe a bit of copper and gold thrown in for good measure. metallics have been on trend for a long while now and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. i especially love mirrored walls and that next-level brass-faced cabinetry — such a lovely design detail that only gets better with age. here’s a look at some of my current favorites —  home accessories, furnishings, and rooms filled with pretty shiny details that also act as works of art. a mid-century modern chrome-legged chair, a beautiful ornate mirror reflecting your room back to you — even a big bold disco ball. all these lovely things that continue to shine on, and on.

friday finds / sfgirlbybay

hi guys! thanks for the brief reprieve last week. i had a very special birthday week and i so appreciate the time to spend with family and friends and also recharge a bit. this week’s friday finds feel on the re-used and repurposed bent — i love a good recycle and i hope i’ve offered up a few ideas that might get your diy wheels spinning. they’ve got mine in full gear for a few project ideas. enjoy your weekend and see you next week.

xo, victoria

  1. i know this little kitchenette is a tad rough around the edges, but i couldn’t love it more. it’s the historic home of artist vanessa bell and its rustic vibe is just exactly what makes it that much more charming, and the tiled backsplash is just beautiful. i love the mismatched unique pieces of pottery, too.
  2. now, this may not be the most practical dish drying rack being that it’s round and that’s perhaps not the ideal shape for most kitchen counters but i’ve still become smitten with it, and used simply a display piece it’s lovely. I’ve been on the hunt, but thus far can only find this ‘half rack’. do let me know if you spot a round one anywhere.
  3. this is such a great mix of vintage meets modern in this kitchen featured on domino. it’s a beautiful lisbon, portugal home makeover, and it’s the kitchen with that little blue-tiled nook i love best. visit domino for the full tour.
  4. i’ve become rather obsessed with whimsical tablescapes (as seen in this post) and so enamored i’ve even created a pinboard for inspiration. i especially love the work of french artist Sarah Espeute’s intricately beautiful but sublimely simple embroidered tablecloths. love this blue runner, but check out her full collection. it’s always being updated since they’re all handmade.
  5. how’s this for perhaps the most epic repurposing i’ve seen lately? architectural digest featured an article on how Homeowners Are Foraging for Good Design and this couple used an overturned boat hull as the walls and roof of their home in Audierne, france. rustic, yes, but kinda, well — bitchen!
  6. everything about this reading room is rather makeshift, but that’s what i like about it. the daybed is pretty thrown together with layered bedding and a bolster cushion, but just so charming (and very french!). the bookshelf, too, is of simple design and it all just feels so welcoming and homey. the perfect place to read.
  7. this definitely diy headboard idea has always been a favorite of mine. simply turn a petite runner rug on its side and hang it above your bed for a super chic look and one that wouldn’t cost a fortune. etsy and chairish are great resources for vintage runners.
  8. i really love the look of these makeshift shelves, too. they look like repurposed boards or wood slats placed between white plaster blocks (cinder blocks painted white could look great!) and they look just smashing. i really like the ‘skinny’ shelf! it helps that the styling is kept at a bare minimum with pretty matching white pottery and a few other collectibles.

today we’re headed to one of my favorite parts of the world — the rustic, romantic and so very Italian island of Sicily. specifically, we’re off to Siracusa, the gorgeous city on the Ionian coast of Sicily known for its ancient ruins, to stay at our very beautiful home away from home, the serene and sunbleached nineteenth-century estate, Dimora delle Balze. also known as an ideal wedding destination, Dimora delle Balze is surrounded by beautiful historical places, so the hotel offers exclusive tours to the ancient nearby cities, providing us easy accessibility to these places full of charm and historical heritage, to enjoy the views of Baroque and Renaissance palaces while taking in the romantic scents of the Mediterranean. gosh, i love Sicily and can’t wait to return. i’ve put together some ensembles for you to pack for a long weekend away. we start with a very feminine crocheted tank top and flowy white maxi skirt, paired with sexy black strappy sandals and chic oversized sunnies to shield your eyes from that bright Sicilian sunshine. add to that some beautiful aquamarine baubles and a fun oversized straw tote — perfect for both farmer’s markets and lazy beach days. i’ve also packed you a cute two-piece swimsuit, beach cover-up, pool slides, and my favorite packable sunhat. all you need now is a good read and i suggest Along the Infinite Sea by Beatriz Williams.  it’s the epic tale of star-crossed lovers in pre-war Europe colliding with a woman on the run in the swinging ’60s — the perfect poolside or seaside read.
