in defense of simplicity.

While over-styled, trend-driven spaces have become de rigueur lately, there is something to be said for simple surroundings — for clearing the visual field and letting a space breathe. With minimal clutter and a restrained hand, these rooms can pack a punch in the most subtle of ways.

Call me crazy but I’ve been feeling the need to really scale things back lately. My eye has been drawn to simplicity and the trendy, maximalist rooms that once caught my eye are no longer doing it for me. Give me white walls, wood tones, and a little bit of outdoors brought in and I am one happy camper.

What about you? Are you in favor of simple or are you a maximalist at heart?!

If your dream, like mine, is to live in a white stucco house out in the Mediterranean with lime plastered walls, arched doorways, and rustic wood shutters, then you’re probably going to love interior designer Carlos Serra’s house in Javea, Spain. Carlos skillfully balances all the white surfaces and zen simplicity with his African and Asian collections and warm, weathered textures, creating a contemporary Old World beauty of a home. Hope you enjoy!

cheers, ezz.

as a single woman living alone, i like to create as safe a space i can — and i mean that quite literally. in addition to my sweet watchdog, lucy i’ve added a brand new security system — Honeywell Home‘s Smart Home Security All-in-One Self-Monitored System. their system comes with Amazon Alexa built-in, and facial recognition that gives me smart mobile alerts. it’s a very do-it-yourself security system made easy (another plus, since i really loathe reading any kind of instruction manual), that you install and control yourself, and that grows with your needs. so essentially you can set it up in minutes and then keep watch on your home from anywhere. and it will even alert you if a window or door is left open where one of your sensors is installed. think of it as the smarter way to know what’s happening at home as you come and go.

one thing i quite like about it: it’s unobtrusive and blends in naturally with your home decor. i’ve been trying to streamline my home this season, keeping it simple if you will. i’m removing clutter, creating a much more zen balance around the house, and what i like about Honeywell Home‘s security system is you barely know it’s there, but it’s there, helping me feel safer — whether that be while i’m at home alone, or while traveling away from home.

and what’s super cool? it can recognize familiar faces to notify you if they arrive home when expected. or if it sees someone it doesn’t know, you’ll get an alert on your phone to see a video clip of who’s there. and because it works with Amazon Alexa the built-in voice control you can change modes automatically with your voice, and talk Alexa as you might anyway — to check the weather, ask questions, control other devices, and more. creating your safe space just got a bit easier.

today we’re headed to a beautiful boutique hotel in philly as they call it — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s largest city, notable for its rich history. meet the lokal hotel, a mash-up of those classic navy blue good looks and a touch of Scandinavian vintage modern. designed by that talented husband & wife team Jersey Ice Cream Company who wanted to create a hotel that felt a little bit more like home, with all the amenities you might crave while sleeping under someone’s else’s roof. warm, cozy and filled with vintage treasures, you know they grabbed my attention immediately with those vintage portrait paintings. we’re thinking of arriving in style, but a little bit on the down-low: our favorite faded denim, a cozy striped sweater and a warm navy Oversized Wool Coat, but we’ve jazzed this ensemble up a bit with some patent leather mustard-colored boots. when you have some downtime, we suggest a great read: Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, a smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes the only way to survive is to open your heart. what better place than in the city of brotherly love?

sometimes, a greater impact can be made when you take things away. take art for instance — a single, simple piece of artwork can speak volumes all on its very own. its negative space can be jarring, and eye-catching all on its very own. and so affordable, too — one of something is less expensive than lots, right? i think starting small with something you truly love can be the best way to start collecting art, and if it never grows beyond that one precious piece, c’est la vie — it will speak to you, and in the end that’s all that really matters when it comes to something so subjective as art.
