color story: blue & yellow. / sfgirlbybay

there’s something about the pairing of blue and yellow that just says ‘holiday’ to me. maybe because it reminds of the south of france, and striped umbrellas on the cote d’azur but the color pairing is nothing less than cheerful. sure, it can lend itself to a moodier feel, because let’s face it, both blue and yellow come in many different shades — from perky butter yellow and cobalt blue that simply scream ‘happy’, to rich gold tones combined with deep navy blue that lean towards the dramatic end of the color spectrum. but together they’re a super-powerful color combination! this week’s color story is all about blue & yellow.

my garden / sfgirlbybay

i know this sounds so silly, but as you may have seen on instagram, i was stung on my thumb by a bee in my garden, and my hand swelled into a balloon! i’ve never had this kind of reaction to a bee sting before and ended up at urgent care to get a shot, some meds and some relief from the pain! so suffice it to say, it was my right hand and i can’t do much until the swelling goes down. i’m dictating this to my phone as we speak to let you know i’ll be off for a few days until i can properly and without pain use the keyboard again. i love bees, but not this particular bee! i’m sure i’ll see you back here on monday when i can type again. have a great weekend!

tote-ally summer.

woven basket totes. / sfgirlbybay

i love a good tote basket — and to prove it, i have them in all shapes and sizes and display my collection proudly hanging from a rattan wall rack, but i’m always finding room for just one more. i use them for the farmer’s market and the flea, grocery shopping, and for sure poolside and a day at the beach. not only do they have a kind of cool european, vintage vibe while you’re carrying them, but they also look pretty hanging out in plain site, too. i also have a couple of french market totes hanging in my kitchen at the ready for my next shopping excursion. i went on the hunt for some nouveau tote bags and found quite a few favorites as well as some inspiration for toting one along — the perfect summer accessory, but oh-so practical, too.

vintage-modern neutrals.

living areas decorated with modern neutrals. / sfgirlbybay

i never really tire of modern neutrals. not your boring beiges, mind you, but instead natural woods, bamboo, rattan, off-white linens, and interesting prints and patterns — a textural mix of layered pieces that look great together but are anything but matchy-matchy if you know what i mean. i think when i visit european cities they tend to really rub off on me in different ways. in mariseille it was all about bold daring colors, and when visiting lisbon it was a more toned down vintage modern vibe — eclectic and unexpected, but very zen for sure. here’s what i mean.

organizing with style.

built-in shelves. / sfgirlbybay

being stuck at home right now, it’s the ideal time to organize the heck out of our homes, cleaning closets, emptying out those junk drawers, and releasing the stash of stuff we’ve been hoarding in our garages, let’s not ignore our shelving! shelves, too, can be in need of tidying. i like to give my bookcase a good going over from time to time — arranging the books by spine color — yes, i’m guilty of this — but don’t judge me, because i’m a very visual person, i tend to remember the spine color of a book which makes it easier to find. but i organize books also by category, i.e. cooking, design, fiction etc. i also like to coordinate my accessories and collections by ‘like objects’ which keeps them from looking too cluttered. for example, all white pottery hangs out together on one shelf, while black pottery is grouped together on another. call me crazy, but i just think it’s more cohesive and looks less like a bunch of junk versus an actual collection. these examples of shelving look quite nice and some of these shelves are even very unique and almost like artwork or have a sculptural look, too. i do love a good inset or built-in shelf. here’s to tidy shelves! and for more inspiration check out my shelf life pinboard.
