embracing the imperfect beauty of wabi sabi.

i’m finding myself with way too much ‘stuff’ again. when i feel this way, not only does my home feel cluttered, but my mind does, too. i have trouble thinking straight and being creative and i have to stop what i’m doing immediately and straighten up my desk or a drawer. i’ve always been like this — i could never work my 9-5 job when my desk was messy, either. so i’m trying to clear the clutter and make life around my home a little more zen — a little more wabi-sabi. Wabi-Sabi is a way of living that focuses on finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting peacefully the natural cycle of growth and decay. it represents japanese aesthetics and a Japanese worldview centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete” with color palettes that mimic those found in nature, like pale greens, grays, and earth tones. to find this simple aesthetic in design and products look to companies like toiro kitchen, truck furniture and muji and bunkado in DTLA (great for paper lanterns). i also find paumes books to be most inspiring – you can find them at kinokuniya book shops. here’s to clearing out the clutter and embracing simplicity and beauty in imperfection.

if you ask anyone they’re likely to agree that i’m a bit of a bag freak. i like to call it aficionado, but hey, semantics. i just love great looking bags of all shapes and sizes and happen to think that they are not only a fashion statement but also serious mood elevators. i love taking a ho-hum outfit and stepping it up with a great bag (shoes, too but that’s another post). so i thought it would be fun to round up some summery bags. i hear a weave is in, and bamboo or straw never go out of style for summer. looking for the perfect farmer or flea market tote? we’ve got you covered there, too.

color story: california sunshine / sfgirlbybay

for this week’s color story how about a little california sunshine to start your week? not literally, but figuratively we’re bursting with some vitamin c with that classic color orange — so fresh, youthful and sassy, is it not? a little orange goes such a long way to making a bold statement, and i’ll admit, i can really only take it in small doses, but those cheerful citrus bits are just enough to make a big impact. whether it’s displaying itself in a beautiful outdoor umbrella or a pretty pompom throw i think orange is just smashing for the upcoming summer months — both inside and outside the house.

friday finds.

friday finds travel special / sfgirlbybay

i don’t know about you, but the closer i get to my second vaccine next week the more my wanderlust kicks in. i’m just itching to travel again, but at the same time i admit to some anxiousness, too. but life must go on, or really what is the point? i’m armchair traveling an awful lot — browsing assouline’s beautiful travel books as they are thought-provoking and travel-inducing as well as a beautiful addition to any coffee table. and i just binge-watched ewan mcgregor’s long way up apple tv adventure series which put me into major journey-envy (not to mention his charm is just so watchable!). so today’s friday finds are all about globetrotting. happy friday everyone!

xo, victoria

  1. venice, italy is one of my favorite places on the planet. not the touristy bits but the smaller neighborhoods where locals hang out. i’ve never made it to burano there yet so i’m longing to get back and visit those colorful, watery streets. oh, and don’t miss the peggy guggenheim museum, either. my most favorite museum ever.
  2. lake como is another spot high on my list to visit in italy. and not to run into resident george clooney, of course. i just want to see that incredible lake in person, perhaps linger all day with a picnic, some rosé, and a great read. maybe i’ll get an invite (in my dreams). by the way, always have your passport current — you never know what travel opportunities might wing your way.
  3. this adorable ‘Va Tutto Bene’ tote bag is the perfect bag to have at our sides no matter where in the world we’re shopping. but i can picture this cute bag on my arm as i leisurely stroll through a european farmer’s market for the freshest fruits. can’t you?
  4. this lovely blog song of style has some great recommendations for getting off the beaten path in paris (and loads of other cities, too). that’s my very favorite part of travel really — getting off the grid and pretending i live in a city and living as much like a local as possible.
  5. petite passport is another of my very favorite travel blogs. she always finds (and photographs beautifully) the best places and i’ve used her recommendations countless times, from lisbon to barcelona and beyond. this review of a new spot in paris, pianoterra looks like a must-visit. she also has wonderfully handy downloadable PDF’s of city travel guides.
  6. another wonderful travel resource is Emily Nathan’s tiny atlas quarterlythe website, quarterly journals, instagram feed and travel book feature travel photography from an abundance of talents like this photo by @zephyrineartois and are all so inspiring. if they don’t get you packing a bag, i don’t know what will.
  7. swedish photographer anna malmberg is another amazing photographic resource for getting yourself geared up and excited for travel. her images never fail to give me destination ideas. i’d love to enjoy an al fresco dinner party at this beautiful outdoor table, for instance. wouldn’t you?
  8. another place i’m aching to visit is morocco, and Riad Jardin Secret in Marrakech specifically. i’ve been ogling photos of this dreamy spot on instagram for ages, so perhaps on my next super marché shopping trip to france we’ll pop over to morocco on the way home. one can dream! and to dream in this lovely guest room? yes, please!

wear this there: xu teahouse & restaurant london.

i absolutely adore london, and i love a good teahouse, but this time it’s perhaps not exactly what you’d think of whilst in londontown. not your typical British high tea but instead a Taiwanese teahouse and restaurant. once it reopens we’ll be headed to the very charming and romantic looking xu teahouse & restaurant. i love their very bygone-era decor with its plush pale green leather booths and taiwanese motifs. the small dish menu looks spectacular too — it’s about time to get our dumplings on! it’s springtime in london, but we’re layering up, nonetheless in a sleeveless pleated play dress, a warm cashmere poncho, and a pretty satin scarf that easily doubles as facemask paired with the cutest pair of floral clogs and very portable crusher hat. oh, and don’t forget your very own chopsticks (much more environmental). london’s a city you want the inside scoop on, so i highly recommend the Not For Tourists Guide to London 2021 — a map-based, neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide that will help you master the city like an expert. Packed with more than 150 maps and thousands of listings for restaurants, shops, theaters, and under-the-radar spots, you won’t find a better guide to London.
